So – what is Micropenis?

Micropenis is an actual medically diagnosed disorder that is commonly mistaken for other conditions. When noticed as an infant, parents have the opportunity to explore treatment measures that become more difficult to perform as the male progresses in age.

How does Micropenis Happen?

During embryo development, a hormonal abnormality seems to take place after the 12th week of gestation.

How is Micropenis Diagnosed?

Diagnosis is done with physical examination of the external genitalia. MP occurs only in XY males (males who possess both chromosomes.) The penis may have a retracted appearance depending on the shaft length and whether the penis is erect or not. The scrotum is still present, but may be underdeveloped.

Measurements are taken with a ruler or caliper while the penis is fully stretched and erect (if possible).

Early diagnosis is crucial because it allows time for exploration of treatment options.

Micropenis is often confused with another genital disorder known as Inconspicuous Penis. This occurs when folds of skin/fat cover the penis and make it less visible. A much simpler issue to correct, Inconspicuous Penis is typically remedied via weight loss.

How is Micropenis Treated?

The primary goal of treatment is to create a comfortable body image for the patient, as he must live with this penis for the span of his life. Finding solutions that increase or create normal sexual function are paramount to successful treatment. Treatments often include:

– Testosterone Treatment

  • Intramuscular Injections:  Includes direct injection into the penis, higher dosages of testosterone are used
  • Topical Application: Less invasive than injections, enters blood stream through the skin.

– Surgical Treatment

I found a post-operative medical photo example that was safe enough to share with you all.  If you’re squeamish about genitalia, scroll no further.

Here is a before and after photo of a patient that has been surgically treated for micropenis. Take a look…

Author’s Note: I wrote this post by request from a reader. Micropenis is a real life disorder that affects a small percentage of men. Those men do exist, and are often in a constant struggle to find happiness both sexually and socially. Please consider this when sharing memes and making jokes – you may unknowingly know someone who is suffering from this issue. Hopefully, by increasing our knowledge of sexual issues, we’ll be able to help our friends and loved ones cope and have successful lives. Be well!

  1. Good article! I’m sporting a micropenis myself, and I’m actually very proud of it (although it took me a while to get there). I’m happy to share my story and my pictures if you’re interested.
