In the day and age of surface piercings and mutilation – penis implants are becoming a popular surgery among men. It’s a somewhat risky procedure, but if successful yields pleasurable results for both partners. There are two types of implants; one for men who suffer from erectile dysfunction and another that is a cosmetic procedure. Today, we will discuss both.

Penile Implants for ED: 

What Is It? 

Penile implant surgery is an option for men who suffer from erectile dysfunction but who have not gotten results from other types of treatments. It is a surgical procedure where we implant a prosthesis directly inside the penis and scrotum to allow a man to achieve an erection (UMM, 2012).

Many men utilize these surgeries to remedy erectile dysfunction. Other factors can also affect blood flow to the penis, such as high cholesterol or poor circulation. Consider stimulating blood flow with a penis pump as a non-invasive option.

How Does It Work? 

A penile implant is a device that is placed surgically, either through one incision in the scrotum or through an incision in the lower abdomen, right above the penis.The device is either inflatable or non-inflatable. Typically the device is filled with salt water (saline), and the patient has a pump, which is hidden in the scrotum. By gently pressing on that pump, the salt water travels through a reservoir that is placed next to the bladder and travels into the device itself, which is in the penis. The device in the penis has two chambers, which go into the erectile chambers of the penis. When these are inflated, and the water inflates the device, then the patient achieves an erection. When they are finished, then they can deflate the device.

Are there age or health limitations on who can have penile implant surgery?

The implant procedure has been performed on patients as young as 20 years old (trauma patients) and as old as 90. Patients who think they are too old or too sick to undergo penile implant surgery can get successful results in the hands of our experienced team. We have successfully performed the implant procedure on patients with complicating conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, organ transplants, etc.

Are there different types of penile implant surgery?

At the University of Maryland, we offer two approaches to penile implant, also known as sexual restorative surgery. One is the traditional method in which the device is placed through an incision in the scrotum. Another method is the infrapubic penile implant, in which the implant and reservoir are placed through an incision in the lower abdomen, right above the penis. In either approach, we minimize dissection in the penis and spare the patient’s natural tissues.

This procedure takes about 15-20 minutes and is minimally invasive. The patient can go home on the same day as the surgery and down time is only a few days. After the incision heals, it is virtually undetectable as the folds in the scrotal skin will mask any scars.

Penile Implants for Cosmetics (Graphic Photos): 

These inserts are known as Penis Beading, and is very common in countries like Thailand. This “art” dates back as early as the 1500’s and is a growing trend.

What is it For? 

Historically, they were inserted as a mandatory prevention method against sodomy. In current times, they are used more for visual attractiveness and sexual pleasure.

How is it Done?

Small slits are cut into the surface of the skin and beads are inserted through these slits. The holes are stitched up and allowed to heal. Removal is done in the reverse order.

What are the Side Effects?

If done incorrectly, penis beading can cause serious discomfort and/or pain, as well as possible infection if the equipment and environment used is not properly sanitized.
