Awkward Question: Can My Vagina Fall Out?

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]an my vagina fall out?

The answer is yes, but probably not for the reasons you think. This event is called Vaginal Prolapse, and is quite common. Prolapse takes place when muscles are strained beyond their ability to stay in place, and certain repeated actions can trigger this:

  • Obesity
  • A long-lasting cough
  • Frequent constipation/straining
  • Tumors on the pelvic organs

Pelvic prolapse tends to be more likely in older women, during or after menopause. Childbirth and prior surgeries in the pelvic area may cause the organs to weaken and fall through. Bladder prolapse is the most common, followed by urethra, uterus, vagina, small bowel and rectum. The organs literally fall through the orifice and protrude from it.

Other Symptoms of Pelvic Prolapse include:

    • Feeling very full in your lower belly.
    • Feeling as if something is falling out of your vagina.
    • Feeling a pull or stretch in your groin area or pain in your lower back.
    • Releasing urine without meaning to (incontinence), or needing to urinate a lot.
    • Having pain in your vagina during sex.
    • Having problems with your bowels, such as constipation.
A physical exam as well as a pelvic exam will be necessary to properly diagnose this disorder and treat it according to the specific organ – but a doctor’s visit is a must. The severity of prolapse can vary, and treatment may range from kegel exercises (discussed here) to invasive surgery.
As always, if you feel pain or discomfort and feel that this may be the cause – please see a doctor immediately.
